It was a trouncing for ten man Bangor on Madeira as the Citizens conceded eight against Maritimo in their Europa League third qualifying round first leg tie.
Although Bangor managed to keep a clean sheet for the first half hour, goals from Tchô and Danilo before the end of the first half meant Maritimo headed towards the break with a two goal advantage.
But Nev Powell’s team was handed a hammer blow in the last minute before half time when captain Jamie Brewerton was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
Baba Diawara scored Maritimo’s third five minutes into the second half and although Nicky Ward gave Bangor a glimmer of hope with a stunning goal after 73 minutes, the floodgates then opened as the home team ran riot and scored four goals in five minutes through Danilo, Diawarae, Tchô and Kanu.
The eighth goal came for Maritimo in the 91st minute through Fidelis before Eddie Jebb scored the visitors’ second with the last kick of the game.
It was a desperately disappointing night for manager Nev Powell and his team, a week after a famous victory for the club in the second qualifying round against Honka Espoo of Finland.

For the first half hour, both teams were evenly matched until Tchô’s free kick took an unfortunate deflection off Dave Morley in the Bangor defensive wall into the net after 33 minutes.
Five minutes later, the fifth best team in last season’s Portugese Liga showed their quality when Danilo scored a breathtaking goal from a counter-attack that started in his own penalty area.
Arguably the game’s turning point came a minute before half time when Jamie Brewerton, captain and Bangor’s defensive rock, was shown a second yellow card and sent off.

Baba Diawarae, a forward from Senegal, found time and space in the box to score the third for Maritimo after 51 minutes.
Bangor scored the next goal on 73 minutes and Nicky Ward’s scorching drive into the top corner from 25 yards will surely be remembered as one of the best European goals ever by Welsh team.
Ward’s goal seemed to wake the team from the city of Funchal and Danilo, Diawara, Tchô and Kanu scored a goal each in a golden five minute period for the islanders.
Fidelis was the fourth Brazilian on the scoresheet when he finished another counter-attack with authority after 91 minutes before Alan Bull crossed for Eddie Jebb to score the visitors’ second goal, seconds before the final whistle.
This was the fifth time a team from Wales had conceded 8 goals in a European game following Rhyl’s result against Partizan in Belgrade last season, Carmarthen against Brann of Norway in 2007 and Barry Town’s games away against Dinamo Kiyv and Porto in 1998 and 2001.
Bangor welcome Maritimo to the Racecourse for the second leg next Thursday and Nev Powell and his team will hope to draw inspiration from Barry Town who bounced back to beat Porto 3-1 at Jenner Park having been beaten 8-0 the week before in the first leg, away from home.
