The Welsh Premier clubs have voted to play a 32 match season for the inaugural Super 12 season.
At the Welsh Premier League’s Annual General Meeting in llandudno on Saturday afternoon, the clubs were unanimous in their support to adopt the new format.
All of the Super 12 clubs will face each other on a home and away basis before the league splits in two.
Following the split, the top six clubs will face each other twice – home and away – with the bottom six clubs doing the same, bringing the total number of matches for the season to 32.
At the end of the season, the league’s champions will go forward to lay in the Champions League whilst the second placed club will join the Welsh Cup winners in the Europa League.
But the clubs voted to adopt a play-off system between those clubs lying third to seventh to decide the league’s third Europa League representative.
Should the Welsh Cup winners be amongst those clubs, the eighth placed club would be invited into the play-offs.
Because of this, the season will be extended, as the play-offs would not be able to take place until after the welsh Cup final.
It was also announced by Welsh Premier League Chairman, Phil Woosnam, that there would be no further reduction of the league for season 2011/12.
It had been thought that the league would be reduced to 11 clubs before reducing again to 10 clubs by 2012/13, however Woosnam intimated that this decisio would now be reviewed each season.
