On this day in 1914, Wales scored their first penalty in international football.

The honour went to Evan Jones of Bolton Wanderers, scoring against Ireland at The Racecourse, Wrexham.

Unfortuantely for Jones and Wales, Billy Gillespie of Sheffield United scored twice for the visitors ensuring an Irish victory and Ireland went on to win the Home Championships in the first time in their history.

It was Evans’ seventh international cap for Wales, but despite scoring the historical goal from 12 yards, it was also his last cap as the First World War curtailed his playing career.

It is some surprise that Wales had to wait almost 23 years before scoring from the spot – a rule introduyced into the Laws of the Game following a proposal by the Irish Football Association in June 1891.

And it was an Irishman who scored the first ever international penalty goal when Bob Milne scored for Ireland against Scotland in 1896.
